DIY For Him Comic Book Box!

Finally a tutorial! I know I know it took long enough right? Unfortunately I can't get better pictures because it was a gift for the ex. He took it with him when he moved out. It's OK, I'm not sad. I ended things. 

 

I'm currently posting from outside at my yard sale. Not doing too bad out here but it's Phoenix and August so it's HOT outside! 

 

 

Supplies:

Wooden Box (Hobby Lobby $2.50)

Mod Podge (on hand but you can get it for $5.00)

Comic Book ($.50 at Bookmans)

Foam Brush ( on hand but $.10)

Sissors

Bowl

File (just in case)

 

 

Step one: Cut up your comic book. I did squares/rectangles in different sizes and put them in my bowl! I used a Captain America book. It took abut 4 pages to cover the box.

Step two: Paint the back of the squres in Mod Podge. Start placing them on your box!

Cover the box! Make it fun.

Step 4: After the box is is covered in your pages cover it in Mod Podge. Do at least 2 coats over the top. This keeps it shiney and keeps anything from popping up! 

DONE! Awesome right?!  He loved it! 

My total out of pocket was $3.00 I had the Mod Podge and all that on hand!

Tutorial Tuesday DIY Hanging Laundry Bag

Today's tutorial will be a hanging laundry bag. 

Supplies:

Fabric. This is a remnant and is 3/4 yard

Bias Tape or Ribbon

A Clothes Hanger

A round object, I used a kids plate

A marker

Standard sewing supplies

 Fold your fabric right sides together. Center your plate towards the top of the fabric. Trace around the plate with a marker, pencil, whatever you chose. 

Cut out the circle. 

Next you would pin the bias tape around your cut circle. I used grosgrain ribbon. If you are in a pinch this works great. Plus ribbon comes in so many awesome prints. Normally I would use bias tape. I am lucky enough to have the Simplicity Bias Tape maker.  As I stated before though this was a remnant so I did not have enough fabric to make matching tape.

Sew it!

Fold it right sides together again and pin along the 3 open edges. 

Make sure to leave an opening in the top center. Make sure you back stitch before and after each pin.  Sew around the 3 open sides and flip the bag right side out. 

Insert your clothes hanger. The top will go through the opening you left. 

YAY! Totally awesome right? Hang that bad boy up!

Tutorial #3 Dinosaur Coat Hanger

This week the tutorial is for a dinosaur coat hanger for the kid's room. Or your room if you're into that kind of thing. 

Supplies:

Toy Dinosaurs (I got these small ones at Dollar Tree for $1.00 each

A board to put them on  (I found this pack of 6 of Joann Fabrics they were $2.50)

Craft Glue

Spray paint

Knife

Bolt Hooks (I got a pack of 4 for close to $1.00)

 I flipped my dinosaur over and they had this seem I decided this is where I would make my cut. 

 I started cutting right on the seam. I made sure to do it straight. As a note I have a set of knives I got two of them for $1.00 at Dollar Tree. I use them just for crafts instead of using my good knives. After I made the cut I sanded the edges a bit.

Apply glue to the cut and stick it on the board. I eyeballed it. I kept my dinosaurs evenly spaced and straight. Let them dry overnight. 

I had already painted a board red for another project, but it was supposed to be a Christmas gift that I never got around to. :(

Take it outside and spray paint it. If you have extra primer around primer it first. I did not. So the paint tends to run down the dinosaurs. It took me about four coats. I let it dry about 30 minutes between coats. I wish I would have had spray primer.

Once it's dry you can put a sawtooth hanger on the back or even some ribbon.

Next take your bolt hooks and screw them into the bottom. I chose three hooks. The same number of dinosaurs I had. 

This will hang in my son's room to hold jackets. It's not hanging yet. Not until I finish his room transformation. He got a big boy bed for Christmas and he loves sleeping in that. So we are working on getting the rest of his room updated to big boy style.

Tutorial Tuesday #3 Dollar Tree Washcloths to Fabulous Unique Baby Shower Gift

Today is a fun tutorial. It's sewing, frugal, and cute! Customizable baby shower gift that works great as washcloths and as booger cleaners. Since they are pretty soft they aren't too rough on the face.

Supplies:

1 pack of washcloths I got these 4 at Dollar Tree

Sewing machine with notions

Scrap fabric (right from my stash)

Cut your fabric a tiny bit larger than the washcloth since this brand of washcloth has a little stretch. Pin right sides together and sew.

Leave a small opening so you can turn it. It's best to leave the opening on a straight part of the cloth not the curve.

Flip you wascloth so the right sides are now out.

Tuck the opening inside and pin it. Next, put it back under the machine and topstitch starting and ending at your pin.

Lather, rinse, and repeat. I mean repeat the above steps to all the washcloths. 

See here I have 4 beautiful and unique washcloths for a shower gift!  For the record they were a huge hit at the shower because they were so cute.

Total out of pocket cost: $1.00

Tutorial #2 One Of a Kind Framed Art and Quick Update

Welcome to Tutorial Tuesday #2! Today's tutorial is fun for the whole family.  Beautiful one of a kind framed art...from the heart.

Here are the supplies you will need to start:

One poster board from Dollar Tree $.59 and a pack of finger paints $1.00.

Next tool a willing artist. This is mine. He was excited to paint for me.

Start painting.  We had a great time painting... this is his rendition of a dinosaur.

After the painting is finished let it dry.

I got this picture and frame for free. My sister gave it to me for my yard sale but I kept it.  It's a nice frame and mat.

I figured out what I wanted to put in the frame. Placed my mat over it and trace a light line. Then I cut outside the line and taped it into the frame. Then hung it up.

I love it. Also up today is a quick little update.

I have been staring up here all week deciding that I want to start a collection and place it up here for decor. Then I realized man this is a mess..... I grabbed an extra basket I had laying around and threw stuff in there.

Awwww...... much better. Now I can stare with a better idea of what I want? I am leaning towards candle stick holders.

Tutorial Tuesday #1 Christmas Box

I have completed  my first ever tutorial! If I could do better let me know what you thought was missing.

This is both a tutorial and some frugal words of advice! I knew I needed 2 things first a tutorial to post and second a box for Christmas money!

Saving Christmas money for me is important. I have my son plus 6 people (soon to be 7 when my nephew is born) in my immediate family to buy for. On top of that I have 2 white elephant gifts that must be $50.00. Wait it gets worse.... I also have my beau and he has 4.. that's right count them 4 kids! That's 14 people to get gifts for! 6 of which are children aged 2-10!  I DIY as many gifts as I can but I still have to buy supplies. Christmas is expensive!

Now theres a few ways you can save money for Christmas.. the first is the $10 a week plan. That will give you $520 for Christmas gifts! $10 a week is easy even on a budget. Cut out 1 lunch out each week of 2 things at the grocery store that are not on your list.  $520 a year with no real work!

The second is the extra money plan. You can save something specific... like each time you have a $5 bill instead of spending it you save it. Or all your change. This is a great way to save too.

Saving throughout the year is better to keep you on budget! Plus you will have cash ready for Black Friday or an awesome sale!

Without further ado... my Christmas money savings box!

Here is what I started with first...

A wooden box, sandpaper, Mod Podge, craft paint, a paper plate, and a paint brush or sponge.

I got my box at goodwill (like 2 years ago!) I'm sure I paid about $1 for it on half price week. I love boxes I have them all over my house. I get one each time I travel somewhere! I collect them!

I cut a square from my large sandpaper. It's easier to work with that way.

I sanded just enough to get the gloss finish off. Paint does not hold well or even to a glossy finish. Trust me!

When I was done my hands looked like this! I washed them and then used a damp cloth to get all the dust off the box.

Pour paint on you paper plate and get to work. Start with a nice thin layer. Then go over it thicker and use as many coats as it takes.

More more more pretty red paint!

I grabbed a piece of scrapbook paper from my stash. I tore the paper to fit my box. I chose to tear instead of cut  to get it a shabby vintage look.

Then I added a nice thick layer of Mod Podge to the top of the box.

I put the paper on and pressed it down nice and smooth. Make sure to get air pockets out and press edges down firmly.

It didn't look complete so I grabbed another paper and used a handy hole punch and Podged that down too. After I painted over the paper with more Mod Podge to seal it in. I used about 3 coats to make sure it was sealed on there.

Then I grabbed by sandpaper and sanded a few edges to add to the shabby look.  Then it was done. I am lazy lucky and still has a Christmas decoration out in my room for a great photo op!

Here it is completed. I love it. It looks nice and I have somewhere to stash my Christmas savings money.

Think of the possibilities. Kids pictures... bedroom decor... pretty damask!
